Suzan Fete Talks About Renaissance Theaterworks 2010-11 Season

Renaissance Co-artistic Director, Suzan Fete

Suzan Fete

I am totally psyched about our 18th season- for a bunch of reasons. But mainly I am excited to work with artists new to RTW on ground-breaking projects.

Our first show REASONS TO BE PRETTY is the final installment in Neil LaBute’s trilogy devoted to our contemporary obsession with physical appearance.  But unlike the first two plays: THE SHAPE OF THINGS and FAT PIG, REASONS doesn’t focus on a single moral issue or rely on 11th hour plot twists, instead its a belated coming of age story. The main-character, Greg, begins to examine his choices, own up to his mistakes and Grow the Heck Up!  What?  Moral resolve and hope for the future?   In a LaBute play?

Yeah its true I swear. Also its really funny and I’m directing and after BLACKBIRD I want to laugh. A lot.   And I have an awesome cast of four actors I’ve never worked with before; Lenny Banovez as Greg, Emily Simoness as Steph, Georgina McKee as Carly and Steve Wojtas as Kent … very cool.

But it’s our second show I’m totally jazzed about.  We are so proud to be the first theater in town to collaborate with the new and absolutely fabulous UPROOTED THEATRE COMPANY.

UPROOTED is the new African-American Theatre Company in Milwaukee, founded by our friends, Dennis Johnson, Marti Gobel, Tiffany Cox and Travis Knight.  RTW and UPROOTED are artistically partnering on our January 2011 production of CRUMBS FROM THE TABLE OF JOY by Lynn Nottage (Ms. Nottage won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for RUINED).  CRUMBS is the first production in RTW’s brand-new DIVERSITY Series.  For the next three years Renaissance is committed to producing at least two offerings each season that showcase the work of racially diverse artists.  This is one way Renaissance is working toward our theater better reflecting the community we serve.

CRUMBS is a sweet delicate memory play, often compared to A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN.

Our last show is IN ACTING SHAKESPEARE written and preformed by James Devita.

IN ACTING SHAKESPEARE makes me want to cheer out loud and hug strangers.

I had the privilege of being in the audience on opening night of IN ACTING last summer at American Players Theater.  To say I was moved by the show is too simple.  DeVita’s  premise that the richness of SHAKESPEARE belongs to everyone… Long Island fisherman, cafeteria workers, bookkeepers, …me, took my breath away. This is a play for anyone who has ever dreamed of a different life.  And I am beyond thrilled to present the Milwaukee Premiere.

So Yeah…I’m psyched. I love my job!

PLAYWRIGHT:  DAVID HARROWER

Born in Edinburgh in 1966, David Harrower now lives in Glasgow, Scotland. After dropping in and out of college and working menial jobs as a young man, he embarked on a disciplined course of self-education, reading library books obsessively eight hours a day for two years. His first play, KNIVES IN HENS (1995), was a critical and popular success.  PRESENCE (2001), DARK EARTH (2003) and KILL THE OLD TORTURE THEIR YOUNG (2003) soon followed.  Harrower has also written dramatic adaptations and translations – of Pirandello, Chekhov and Schiller among them – as well as projects for BBC television and film. But it was BLACKBIRD (2005) that triggered his career’s meteoric rise.

BLACKBIRD

The Edinburgh International Festival commissioned Harrower to write BLACKBIRD, premiering it in 2005.  Receiving exceptional reviews, it was moved to London’s West End and Stockholm in 2006, produced in New York and San Francisco 2007, and in 2008 toured the UK and was then produced all around the world.

BLACKBIRD earned the prestigious Laurence Oliver Award (Britain’s version of the Tony’s) in 2007, jettisoning it to the forefront of outstanding new plays. It also won the Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland in 2006 and earned Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago a Joseph Jefferson Award for “Best Acting” this past autumn.

Harrower’s inspiration for BLACKBIRD was a newspaper account of sex-offender Tony Studebaker, a military man who made contact with an underage girl on the internet, later having a sexual relationship with her.  (The play does not follow the story of that trial literally.) As a result of the Studebaker case, Britain introduced laws regulating Internet chat rooms that allowed older adults to “groom” underage victims.

According to Harrower, BLACKBIRD at one point contained 15 characters, 4 locales, the ghost of Marvin Gaye and a performance by a children’s choir.  “You kind of have to go to that stupid place… to get back,” said the playwright.  He then cut the cast down to 3 and finished the play in 4 weeks. The resulting work’s literary style is reminiscent of David Mamet’s with its distilled, staccato, strangely poetic dialogue.

BLACKBIRD is a challenging work for actors, director and audience members alike.  Its subject is painful and disturbing.  But the work’s authenticity and artistry struck both our Artistic Core and Play Selection Advisory Committee as haunting and outstanding.  Renaissance is proud to premiere this provocative and stunning drama to the Milwaukee community.  We hope that its unflinching examination of human interactions sheds light on this dark issue.

Jennifer Rupp

Here’s Renaissance Theaterworks’ Co-Artistic Director, Jennifer Rupp, with her mouth open again – always performing. If she’s not performing on stage with fellow Red Pepper Jelly cast members, she’s performing her fundraising duties for Renaissance or performing her business manager duties for ComedySportz (where she works with her husband, Dick Chudnow, and son, Nick Chudnow). Interesting Facts: Jennifer can flip a coin on her belly, knows the National Anthem by heart and loves cookies…any kind of cookies.

Ride on for Team Renaissance!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

It’s time to sign up for the coolest gig in town.  That’s right…I’m talking about the The Renaissance Team for the UPAF Ride for the Arts.  On Sunday, June 7, thousands of bike riders are getting together for a fun ride while raising money for the UPAF.  And UPAF is a big sponsor of the performing arts in Milwaukee.  So raising money for them is actually raising money for Renaissance.

To sign up for the Renaissance Team, go to www.millerliteride.com and click on register on a team.  Find Renaissance Theaterworks and our secret password is thedig, but ssshhhhh, don’t tell anyone, unless they are going to sign up for the ride.  Everyone who joins the RTW team will get a goodie bag filled with cool stuff including a team shirt with the Renaissance logo on it – YEA!!  Deadline for a team shirt is May 6.

See you at the finish line party!!

Want to become involved with Renaissance Theaterworks… Become a Friend!

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

There are plenty of volunteer opportunities with Renaissance Theaterworks that really makes a difference to the company and to the actors.  And it’s fun.  The Friends Group is a volunteer group of people who share a love of Renaissance and wants to do what they can to be a part of it or to help out.

One of the greatest pleasures as well as help that the Friends Group provides is the “Sundown Suppers.”  On Saturday’s during the run of a  performance, the cast and crew have a show at 4p and 8p.  This doesn’t allow them enough time to get dinner, so RTW arranges dinner for them.  This is a “Sundown Supper.”  And as a Friend Group Volunteer, you would be able to provide dinner for the cast and crew.  Essentially,  you would be hosting a dinner party for the cast, crew and you can include your friends if you wish.  It’s really a lot of fun and you get to meet the cast and crew and chat with them about the show, how they got into acting or whatever.  It’s really a rewarding experience.

It’s fun and exciting to meet Milwaukee’s celebrities!  Let us know if you are interested in becoming a Friends Group member or would like more info about the Sundown Suppers.

The Dig closes to rave reviews

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Hope you didn’t miss The Dig, which closed Sunday, February 8 at the Broadway Theater Center.  This was the world premiere of Marie Kohler’s latest play.  Shown here is Brian Mani and Catherine Lynn Davis, playing the main characters of Jaime and Maddy who are siblings.

Do you see the man in the background?  That’s Paul Hurley, playing the younger Jaime, at the beginning of his schizophrenia.

What’s up next for Renaissance?  Theatrically…Barney & Bee, which opens March 20 and runs through April 12.  Just for fun…check us out at the St. Patricks Day Parade.
