The oldest surviving play in western literature, THE PERSIANS is a moving elegy for a fallen civilization. Aeschylus, a Greek veteran of the Persian Wars, unconventionally sets the play at the enemy court, where the Persian queen and cabinet await the first reports of the unimaginable defeat of the Great Persian Army.
